Many of us use our driver’s license as identification while flying domestically. But did you know
that beginning May 7,2025, your state issued identification must be Real ID compliant or you
won’t make it through airport security? In 2005, congress passes the Real ID Act to establish a
minimum standard for issuing state identification. Each state’s requirements may vary, but at
minimum, you must present proof of identity, such as a birth certificate or passport, proof of
having a social security number, such as a social security card, and two forms of proof of
residency. It’s easy to determine if you have a Real ID because they all have some form of a star
in the top right corner. If you’re traveling as a family, children under 18 will not be required to
have a Real ID. Like the old driver’s licenses, your Real ID cannot be used to cross into Canada
or Mexico, or for international cruise travel. Passports, Global Entry cards, Department of
Defense ID’s, and enhanced driver’s licenses are still acceptable for passage through TSA. So,
check the top right corner of your drivers license and if you don’t see a star, make an
appointment with you local DMV. Happy Travels!
